Sozialforschungsstelle Dortmund (sfs) is  one of the long established and major research centres for social sciences in Germany. Founded in 1946, the sfs has been a state institute of North Rhine Westphalia from 1972 to 2006. Since the beginning of the year 2007 sfs is a Central Scientific Institute of the Technische Universität Dortmund.

A multidisciplinary team of labour scientists, social scientists, economists, educators, statistical experts, engineers and computer scientists undertake research, consultation and evaluation projects with respect to current issues in the world of labour. The research puts heavy emphasis on directly applicable results. A main part of these projects are organised in networks of co-operation with relevant partners from the respective research or consulting field.
